The vineyard

The Currà vineyard is located in the town of Neive, which is very close to the area of Barbaresco; this results in a wine rich in tannis, like all the wines from Barbaresco, but with the fruity, charming elegance of Neive. This wine is released one year after the other crus to better express these components.

The vinification

The fermentation and the maceration on the skins normally takes about 22-24 days. No selected yeasts are used. The malolactic fermentation happens in French barrels coopered expressively for for us by Francois Frères in Burgundy. The wine stays in these barrels for approximately 18-20 months, half of this time on its lees. 25% of the barrels used for aging this wine are new, the remaining 75% have previously been used up to 4 times. There is no filtering and no fining prior to bottling.
The Barbaresco Currà has a deep garnet red colour; the nose reveals its great personality with a powerful, fruit driven aroma, integrated by notes of menthol, red fruits, tar and hints of spices. On the palate, as the wine opens up in the glass, it displays ripe red fruits, licorice and minerals well balanced by an intense and mineral-like freshness on the finish. The tannins are firm but well-integrated.

The vintage

2008 - Winter was very cold and with a lot of snow; in springtime the weather was almost perfect . Starting in early June the weather worsened considerably, with rain almost daily and temperatures 2-3°C below the seasonal average: these conditions continued until the first ten days of July, which had a negative influence on the flowering of the vines and thus led to marked phenomena of floral abortion and a vegetative delay. In mid-July the weather conditions changed radically with the arrival of sunshine and a rise in the temperatures to traditional seasonal levels: clear skies and day/night temperatures of 15-18°. In Piedmont these weather conditions continued uninterruptedl up until October, enabling a recovery of the vegetative growth and the continuation of the ripening of the grapes in a gradual and perfect way, helped by the decidedly low quantity of grapes on the vines.
